| Transport of the Deceased to Serbia |
To transport human remains to the Republic of Serbia it requires prior permission. In order to secure such a permit /called SPROVODNICA/, certain documents and procedures are required.
If the deceased was a citizen of the Republic of Serbia, had a valid Serbian passport and did not die from any contagious disease, the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia or the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago or New York, depending on in which state the deceased had lived, may issue the permit (SPROVODNICA) upon presentation of the following documents:
• Request of family for issuing of the document (Sprovodnica) • The deceased’s valid Serbian passport. If the deceased did not have a valid Serbian passport , it will be necessary to present the certificate on Serbian citizenship and a document serving as proof of identity (identification card, driver's license, old passport etc) • The Certificate of Death • A certified statement by the local health authority that the deceased did not die of any contagious disease • A certificate issued by a Funeral Home stating that the human remains were not previously bured, that they were prepared for transport according to the international regulations, and placed in a hermetically sealed metal/zinc box • Funeral home’s letter stating the flight itinerary; date and place of the departure; date and place of the arrival; name of consignee, if any • Money Order in the amount of $9 payable to the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia as a fee for issuing the document • Return self-addressed envelope with paid postage for registered mail
If the deceased was not a citizen of the Republic of Serbia, it will be necessary to present all above and Certificate of pertinent authorities of Serbia (i.e. municipal authorities, cemetery) that plot has been reserved at a specify cemetery for the burial of the deceased (coffin, urn).
If the cause of death was plague or variola, the Embassy can not issue the document (Sprovodnica) without approval of proper authority of the Republic of Serbia.
